Service and line monitoring

Decentralised monitoring and analysis

Heterogeneous networks, cost pressure and increased demand of the end user force network operators and service providers to use the available resources in an efficient manner. LMS, the Line Monitoring & Test System of Aartesys is ideal for supporting network operators and service providers in this task.

LMS offers a basic system that fulfils all the requirements for building a networked structure that is linked with IP protocols through LAN/WAN interfaces. On top of such a system, performance monitoring applications such as leased-line monitoring, traffic data analysis of voice quality measurements can easily be implemented.

Benefits for technically oriented users

  • On-line line monitoring of alarms
  • Proactive fault detection and removal
  • Remote-controlled protocol analysis to detect sporadically occurring link faults
  • Simple location of the place of a fault in the network installation / private installation
  • Service quality monitoring of important connections
  • Capturing and evaluation of cause/location values for fault localisation
  • Load and performance analysis
  • Quality statement concerning carriers used: ASR, PDD, CCR

Benefits for users who are not technically oriented

  • Non-intrusive recording of all traffic data at a standardised, manufacturer-independent interface.
  • Monitoring of 100% traffic statistics (incoming and outgoing) for end customer consulting.
  • Service level agreement monitoring from the carrier’s or the end-customer’s point of view.
  • Checking of the telephone user behaviour of PBX users.

Reporting

In the AMIRA environment, the reporting tool Business Objects TM (BOXI) is used to provide extensive data evaluation and reports. In addition to smart data evaluation function, BOXI also provides functions for compiling HTML reports as well as for the on-line publication of evaluations.

TDM line monitoring and alarming

After initial operation and configuration, the LMS Probe permanently monitors the connected lines. Events on the line are evaluated according to configurable parameters and alarms are sent to the AMIRA Management System.

The alarm events are logged in the AMIRA database and can be presented in reports. They can also be displayed on the AMIRA Alarm Viewer and escalated to external alarm systems.

Extended VoIP and TDM traffic analysis / CDR recording

Traffic data logging generates a call detail record (CDR) for all incoming and outgoing connections. This also applies for failed connections. In addition to the calling and called numbers, connection parameters such as setup and release time, duration of the connection, progress indicators and cause/location values are logged.

The data are logged by remotely operated LMS probes that are directly connected to the communication lines. LMS probes are available for logging data of TDM lines (ISDN, POTS) or VoIP traffic on IP networks.

Periodically or at the request of the management system, the protocol data are loaded from the LMS probe onto the AMIRA management system.

Performance analysis of VoIP and TDM service providers

The provider performance analysis is based on the parameters derived from the line and traffic analysis and the CDRs and provides information concerning the quality of the telecommunication services as seen by the end user.

Special evaluation and appropriate presentation in the BO reporting tool shows the relevant parameters from the point of view of the end user of the telecommunication services. This includes the most important quality parameters such as connection setup time, ASR, etc. as well as additional technical information such as capacity utilisation of the lines at the time or cause/location analysis.

SLA monitoring

The LMS Probe monitors the connected lines and logs line results and Layer 2 protocol data. The EDSS-1 protocol with all additional services is supported by default.

Depending on their priority and importance, the line events transmitted are stored by the AMIRA Management System in the central database, shown in a special alarm viewer, transferred to as higher-level alarm system or externally forwarded e.g. via SMS.

The Layer 1 and 2 events are combined by the management system in accordance with the parameter "Line availability" according to ITU-T G.826 / M.2100. This parameter is used for SLA verification or documentation and for proof of line performance.

Leased-line monitoring system

In this application, the LSM probe is used for monitoring of leased lines. The system allows measuring and monitoring of a main line as well as a backup line.
